Each year, the Student Activities Board sponsors the events that take place during Transylvania University’s Rafinesque Week. In order to celebrate the memory of Constantine Rafinesque and keep in the spirit of Halloween, the events always have spooky themes that provide thrills and chills for the students of Transy.

Staring on Friday, Oct. 23, the annual tradition kicked off with the Bonfire in Back Circle, featuring refreshments provided by Transylvania Environmental Rights and Responsibilities Alliance.

Transy Night Out to ScreamPark took place on Saturday, Oct. 24. ScreamPark is the largest local Halloween haunt in Kentucky. The park features three brand new attractions: Castle of Fear, the Abyss and Insanity Chaos. Each has many unique attractions that are designed to frighten those that enter. Tickets for this attraction are still available and the deadline to use them has been extended to November.

Even though Transylvania's ghost tours are over, the Lexington Ghost Walk and Creepy Crawl will continue till Nov. 7.The Transy Ghost Tours were given by the Theater Guild on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Held every year, the tours take participants all around campus, including Forrer Hall, Clay and Davis Halls, and Haupt Humanities. The guides tell stories of Transylvania’s resident ghosts, like the “Lady in Red” of the Mitchell Fine Arts Center, Betty Gail Brown and the “Lady in Yellow.”

During this week, SAB has been showing scary movies on channel 71, known as Fright Nights on Film, co-sponsored by the Campus Center. Wednesday featured “The Orphanage” and “Saw.” Tonight, catch “The Amityville Horror” at 7 p.m. and “Haunting in Connecticut” at 9. “Exorcist: The Beginning” airs on Friday, and “It” on Saturday, both at 7 p.m.

“I think the movies are a pretty cool new feature this year. I mean, Transylvania University has to embrace the Halloween season,” said junior Taylor Johnson. “It’s kind of like an unspoken rule.”

Today, the winners of the Tomb Stay will be announced at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. There will be a parade to the tomb, which will be leaving from the 1780 Café to escort the winners to the tomb at 10 p.m.

The final events of the week will happen on Friday and Saturday. The Haunted Underground, sponsored by SAB and Residence Life, will start on Friday and take place in Forrer Hall’s basement. Those wanting to attend will need to meet at the loading dock between Forrer and the Campus Center between 9 and 11 p.m.

“It’s the same as we’ve done in years past, but with a new spin,” said Head Adviser Mike McNary. “It’s self-guided, so it will be like a haunted trail, just smaller in size.”

There will be tickets available for the Halloween showing of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” at the Kentucky Theater in the Campus Center. This will be the last event sponsored by SAB for Raf Week.
