This year, the conference tournament for Transylvania’s cross-country teams falls on Halloween, but they are not scared of the competition ahead of them. This season, both the men’s and women’s teams have been competitive. At the start of the season, the women’s team ranked No. 8 in the coaches’ poll. But as the season progressed and through their hard work and determination, they are more likely to end up ahead of that.

“The girl’s team is competitive this year. At the beginning of the season, we were No. 8, but right now we look to finish 6th,” Head Coach Jason Moncer said. “We just have to run hard against Hanover (College) to be able to secure the No.-5 spot. Everyone has to step up in conference to be ahead of Hanover.”

He continued, “If we finish 5th, that’s good. We were ahead of what we expected to be, but if not, then we tried our hardest and we can do better next year.”

The women’s team will consist of first-years Ria Keegan and Barbara MacNeill, sophomores Betsy Haines, April Myers and Tori Elrod, and juniors Julianne Norman and Ashley Stafford. Stafford is back after missing a huge chunk of the season with an injury.

The men's cross-country team is trying to recover as three of the four players nurse injuries. On the men’s side, they may have a tougher time in conferences as 3 of the 5 players are resting their injuries.

“We want the boys to be fresh when it comes to conference time so they are resting the injuries now,” Moncer said. This year, the men’s cross-country team is new, and with a new team comes a new makeup as they progressed throughout the season. Last season, they did not race in the conference championships.

“The recruits for next year are looking good,” Coach Moncer mentioned.

The men’s team consists of first-years John Bush, Daniel Rouse and Ryan Kaufman, sophomore Daniel Chartier and senior Rod Erfani.

When asked about conference, Erfani said, “I am looking forward to running in conference, and I will do my best to help the team out.”

On Oct. 31, 2009, College of Mount St. Joseph will host the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in Cincinnati. The women will start at 11 a.m. and the men will start at 12 p.m.
