Letter to the Editor: Response to March 4 Edition of “QETG”

Dear Editor,

Lately, the Rambler has featured a new column by an “anonymous” gay contributor who gives out unsolicited fashion advice to Transy’s straight men. You know the one: “Queer Eye for the Transy Guy.”

Now, I pride myself on being a gay man who isn’t easily offended by the prejudices and stereotypes endured by the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual community. I generally discount them as stupidity and move on. But for a member of the gay community to be spearheading such counterproductive behavior is appalling, and at best offensive.

It is ludicrous for this person to attempt to speak on behalf of an extremely diverse group. Believe it or not, not all of us really care what shoes you’re wearing or what your eyebrows look like. We’re not all superficial. It’s disgusting that you’re taking a label I wear with pride and reduce it to nothing more than a fashion statement.

This sort of image is the exact thing that thousands of gay and bisexual men and women have fought years to stop: being presented as a homogeneous, superficial group of fashionistas. You’re spitting in the face of over 50 years of progress and hard work.

I don’t care if you wish to continue handing out unwarranted fashion advice, but stop doing so under such presumptuous and bigoted pretenses.
