Presidential Search Update

And then there were two.

In just a few months the search for a Transylvania University president to follow in Dr. Charles Shearer’s footsteps has progressed to the selection of two finalists, according to Director of Public Relations Sarah Emmons.

The two finalists’ names were not available for release at press time, but they may be released as early as today.

A series of community forums will be held to assess the public’s opinion of each candidate. The official schedule for the two finalists’ forums will be released with the finalists’ names. According to Emmons, each candidate will have three separate forums. Every individual forum will be intended for faculty, staff or students.

At yesterday’s full senate meeting SGA president Jacob Brumfield announced that the two student forums will be held Tuesday, April 6, and Thursday, April 8. Both of these are at 4 p.m. in the faculty-staff lounge located near the Rafskeller.

This announcement comes after Chairman of the Board William T. Young Jr. posted an update on Inside Transy announcing the search committee’s selection of unnamed semifinalists.

“I am grateful to the search committee for their extraordinary commitment to Transylvania. I know that they also share my optimism that this will be an extremely successful search,” Young said in the posting.

President Shearer announced in October his intent to retire in June, should a worthy candidate be selected. He will be leaving behind a 27-year legacy highlighted by such milestones as the construction of 13 campus facilities, a near doubled enrollment, an endowment increase of $82.2 million, the creation of the Kenan Lecture series and the switch to NCAA Division III athletics.
