Goals are the most important aspect in the game of soccer. It takes a tough athlete to guard the goal and a talented one to make the saves that goalies do. Goalies must stretch themselves to make sure the opponent does not get the ball past them.

Senior Cori Hickman saves a shot on goal against Berry College.

For the Transylvania women’s soccer team, senior Cori Hickman has been just that. The women have been able to rely on her to get the job done between the goal posts.

“Cori has been a solid and consistent performer in goal,” said head coach Michael Fulton. “She is experienced, consistent, and plays in a specialty position and understands her responsibility.”

As the season progresses, Hickman will need to continue to be the goalie that she has been during her Transy career.

“Cori has been a good (goalkeeper) for us, providing us with a strong presence in the goal, which results in fewer goals given up and more wins,” said Fulton.

During Hickman’s years at Transy, she and her team have been successful.

“My soccer career at Transy has been amazing. Not only have we won a conference tournament and been to an NCAA tournament, but I’ve created lifelong friendships with my teammates,” said Hickman.

Although Hickman has helped lift the Pioneers to a 6-0 record, her saves are not the only thing helping the team out. The team chemistry has pushed the ladies past tough opponents.

“The team is really meshing well which is very important with so many new faces,” she said.

Hickman had four saves in the 2-1 win over the College of Wooster.

“Wooster is a tough team. We really had to pull together and work as a unit to pull off a victory,” Hickman said. “This team has all the potential to win the conference and conference tournament.”

According to Hickman, the women believe that, if they can play solid defense and capitalize on scoring opportunities, “We will make some noise on the national scene.”
Their next contest is Saturday at Hall Field against Denison University at 3 p.m.
