The Transylvania women’s tennis team has been a dominating presence in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Coaches in the conference have recognized their talent and ability to win.

Junior Kelsey Fulkerson is among the top contributors on the 2010 squad. Fulkerson and the women's team look to take their success all the way to the HCAC championship.

“We were ranked unanimously by all the coaches in the conference that we would win the whole conference tournament again,” said senior Abby Newcom.

Coming into the 2010 season the women had a 12-match winning streak. This weekend their streak ended with a 6-3 loss to Rose-Hulman at the Pioneer Tennis Complex.

But even with that loss, the women still have the rest of the 2010 season to look forward to reaching their goals.

“This year is going well for us; we are 5-1 in conference play. We had a tough loss last weekend but are ready to bounce back from it for our last weekend of conference play,” said junior Kelsey Fulkerson.

As conference play is coming to a close the women are looking forward to what the end of the season will bring.

“We are excited for the next month with a couple tournaments coming up along with the conference tournament. This team is ready for the challenges ahead,” Fulkerson said. “The team is focused and ready to finish up conference matches (this) weekend.”

With a similar look to the 2009 team, the women are focusing their efforts on building the team up as whole.

“One person will not carry our team. We need our entire team to work together as one. Tennis is an individual sport, but in college it is a team sport,” said head coach Chuck Brown.

With very few new faces on the team, the women have been able to use their veteran talent to build on the success of the 2009 season.

“We have a lot of experience coming back this year. We have four returning first-team all-conference selections coming back this year. We won it last year and they know what we need to do to win,” said Brown.

“(The 2010 team has the) players to win the HCAC again and we’ll do our best to do so,” Brown continued.

“Our goals,” Brown summed up, “are to win the HCAC for the second-straight year, go to NCAAs again and win the Highest Team GPA award for the second-straight year. We have a good shot at all three if we keep working hard.”

The women will be rounding out their conference play this Saturday at home against Anderson University and Defiance College. The match against Anderson will be at 9 a.m.; the team will then play Defiance at 1 p.m.
