Student organizations within the Transylvania community are invited to participate in this year’s Make a Difference Day Oct. 22 as part of the National Day of Doing Good. Make a Difference Day is a nationwide event sponsored by the HandsOn Network and USA Weekend publication.
“Make a Difference Day can be looked at as maybe the kickoff for the year, but what community service is all about is more than just the one day that you’re out in the community getting your hands dirty,” said senior Annie Jones, the event’s coordinator. “It’s about being passionate about the needs of the community — to have a righteous anger when you see that something isn’t right and you want to do something about it to fix it.”
Last year over 15 Transy organizations participated in 13 separate projects around the Lexington community, working with different nonprofits such as Habitat for Humanity and the International Book Project, which will be participating again this year.
Transy students are encouraged to volunteer at off-campus nonprofit organizations around town. Jones aims to have 20 student groups work on as many projects as possible. Some community organizations that will be involved are the YMCA Black Achievers Program and the Lexington History Museum.
