It’s back. The alleged septennial “curse” from Constantine Samuel Rafinesque has officially fallen upon the 2011-2012 school year.
Who is Rafinesque? What curse?
In the early 1800s, Rafinesque taught botany at Transylvania University. Many considered him an intelligent but eccentric man.
Upon his release from the university after quarreling with the president, he supposedly placed a curse on the school. After past tragic occurrences many years following, such as the burning down of Old Morrison, many wait for anything that may befall the university on this round of the seventh year, according to the calendar kept by Diane Fout, director of student activities and the Campus Center.
Transy still considers Rafinesque deserving of respect. Having a dining area named in his honor, and devoting an entire week to him in October known as Raf Week, his name still lives on this campus despite his death many years ago.
This year Raf Week events will include the traditional overnight stay in Raf’s tomb, for which any student can put his or her name in a drawing to take part. Another drawing will take place for two lower-level tickets to the University of Kentucky vs. Transy basketball game Nov. 2.
In addition, Transylvania’s staff engagement team is sponsoring an event called Pumpkin Mania.
The goal for this Pumpkin Mania is to have 1,000 lighted and carved pumpkins on the steps of Old Morrison Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., which will remain lit through Halloween night. Pumpkins will be available for carving in Back Circle Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (first come, first served), and students are encouraged to participate.
Faculty and staff can carve a pumpkin on Old Morrison lawn Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. All students, faculty and staff who contribute carved pumpkins will be entered into a drawing for a free pair of lower-arena tickets to the TU-UK basketball game.
