Why Transy shouldn’t FACE IT

Dear Editor,
Recently, President R. Owen Williams signed the FACE IT petition, a campaign to express outrage that Facebook’s board of directors will be composed exclusively of seven white men. The campaign’s website claims it is “ridiculous” for a private company to shut out female participation from its board of directors. Students were encouraged to sign the petition both on Inside Transy and on Transy’s official Facebook page with little explanation, and this campaign went largely unnoticed by the student body. Presumably, the president’s signature was meant to spark student involvement.
Why did Transylvania University jump on this bandwagon? Why wasn’t this protest focused on Congress or some other organization that actually affects our lives? If Transy actually cares about the plight of women in the tech workforce, why not offer a scholarship for female computer science majors?
