Pioneers Finish Strong

LEXINGTON,Ky– Transylvania’s volleyball team played six sets on Saturday. They won all six of them.

The Pioneers finished their successful 2012 regular season with victories against Manchester University and Asbury University, both in straight sets. The first win on Saturday morning clinched a shared season-title in the Heartland Conference (with Mount St. Joseph) and Transylvania’s second 20-win season in school history.

The second match of the day featured two strong central Kentucky teams. Despite it pitting two non-conference opponents against each other, the atmosphere was electric, with a sizeable crowd supporting both teams. The final score of three sets to zero in Transylvania’s favor does a disservice to the quality volleyball played at the Beck Center on Saturday.

Transylvania and Asbury both entered the match with 20 wins or more, with seven girls standing 5’10 or taller, and with the hopes of riding a momentous victory into the postseason. Each set bore witness to contentious, long volleys, to great defense at the net, and close games that were up for grabs until the very end.

But ultimately, the Pioneers prevailed. Led by a dominating performance by Junior Meghan Bowers, Transylvania held on to slim leads in each of the three sets, sweeping their second opponent of the day. Despite a team with zero seniors and lack of experience, the Pioneers remained poised when the pressure mounted. Not once on Saturday did a set get away from them.

The victory sends Transylvania into the postseason having won 19 of their last 25 games, including an 8-1 record in conference play. Next weekend, the team travels to Mt. St. Joseph for the HCAC Tournament. If the storybook season continues, and the youthful team can win the Heartland, Transylvania could win its first berth to the NCAA Division-III tournament.

In six straight sets on Saturday, the Pioneers sent a message to the Heartland Conference and beyond: they may have had a strong finish to the season.

But they’re far from finished.
